Praise for the Innovators

I love to research the things that I encounter in everyday life. It fascinates me to no end to learn how things originated, who invented them and why—particularly when it comes to some of the tools I’ve used to help me with my reading struggles.

What surprised me—though it really shouldn’t have—is that the daughter of Audible’s founder is dyslexic. He formed it because he wanted to help others like his daughter who shared her struggle. While Amazon bought the company a number of years ago, he continues to run that division. It’s an amazing story and one that gives me a great deal of inspiration.

I’ve always loved the quote from the film Wall Street II that “a fisherman always sees another fisherman from afar.” A person who struggles with reading can often see it in someone else, and not just in the things they say or do. It’s because of this that I think it is more than likely that the options on YouTube, the spoken word function on Google, and tools like Grammarly were designed or inspired by someone who had difficulty reading or had someone in their life who did. They made those tools and advancements in the technology for people like us.

I want to thank all of those people at Apple; all the people who program the dictation software; all the people at these enormous companies who might never know the impact their innovation has had. Without Amazon, without Audible, where would I be? Had they not created these things, I wouldn’t be able to share my story with you.

If your children struggle, tell them that the next Audible might be in them. Inspire them and motivate them to embrace technology. As long as it continues to progress and develop, they will have the opportunity to see the world in ways we never did. They’ll have opportunities we didn’t.

The next innovation might be theirs.
